Choosing a service area radius

The right radius is the furthest you can drive for a job and still make money on it. Work it out from your average job price, your fuel cost, and how long the drive takes at the busiest time of day.

  • Most mobile businesses start with 10 to 25 miles around where they live or work.
  • Charge a travel fee, or set a higher minimum price, for the outer ZIP codes.
  • Split a large area into zones and give each zone its own days, so you aren't driving across it every day.

Questions

How is the distance measured?

In a straight line from the centre of your ZIP code to the centre of each other ZIP code, using US Census Bureau data. Driving distance is usually longer, so allow for roads, rivers and bridges when you pick a radius.

Why is a ZIP code I serve missing, or one I don’t serve included?

ZIP codes are areas, not points. A large rural ZIP can reach inside your radius even when its centre is outside it, and the other way round. Treat the list as a starting point and add or remove ZIP codes you know about.

Why can’t it find my ZIP code?

Some ZIP codes cover only PO boxes or a single building and have no area of their own in the Census data. Try a nearby residential ZIP code instead.

Does this work for UK, Irish or Australian postcodes?

Not yet. This tool covers US ZIP codes. ZipScheduler itself works with postcodes in the UK, Ireland, Australia and elsewhere.
