Jobber Alternatives for Small Service Businesses

Jobber is one of the best-known field service management tools for home service businesses, covering quotes, scheduling, invoicing and a client portal. Plenty of businesses love it. Others start looking elsewhere, usually for one of three reasons:

  • They use only part of it. A solo cleaner or groomer who mainly needs online booking can end up paying for quoting and job management they never touch.
  • Price grows with the team. Plans tied to users or tiers can climb as you add staff.
  • Booking by area is what they need most. Mobile businesses want to stop out-of-area bookings before they happen, and want customers to see only the days they serve that area.

Full disclosure: we make ZipScheduler, one of the options below. We have tried to be fair to every tool here, and we say plainly who each one suits better. Features and prices change, so check each product’s website for current details.

1. ZipScheduler: booking organised by service area

Best for: mobile and home service businesses whose biggest headache is where jobs are, not quoting.

Customers enter their zip code or postcode before anything else. If you don't serve them, they're told politely; if you do, they see only the days you work in their area. You can take deposits through your own Stripe account, send the balance after the job, sync to Google Calendar, let clients book several appointments in one visit, and keep client notes and history in a built-in CRM. There's a free plan. See ZipScheduler vs Jobber in detail.

Less suited to: businesses that live on complex multi-option quotes and accounting sync.

2. Housecall Pro

Best for: home service companies with a team in the field who want dispatching, invoicing, payments and marketing in one place. Similar in scope to Jobber, so worth comparing side by side.

3. ServiceM8

Best for: trades businesses, particularly in Australia, the UK and New Zealand, that want job management built around a phone app.

4. Workiz

Best for: small field service companies such as locksmiths, garage door and appliance repair firms that want dispatching with phone and payment tools built in.

5. GorillaDesk

Best for: pest control and lawn care businesses that want routing and recurring service schedules designed for their trade.

6. Square Appointments

Best for: appointment-based businesses already taking payments with Square, especially where clients come to you.

How to choose

  1. Write down the one job you most need software to do. If it's quoting and invoicing, stay with a full field service tool. If it's filling your diary with the right bookings in the right areas, a booking-first tool will be simpler and cheaper.
  2. Count your team. Per-user pricing matters more the bigger you get.
  3. Try it as a customer. Book a test appointment on your own booking page from your phone. That's what your customers will do.
